Over the last four decades Allan has been at the forefront of contemporary folk song. His songs are faultlessly constructed and flawlessly performed, with his instantly recognisable voice, attractively dark and mellow, along with his intricately detailed yet full-sounding guitar playing. His album, The Traveller, won the Grand Prix du Disque de Montreaux for the best European album, and his CD Colour to the Moon (2001) represents the work of an artist at his most mature and confident. Allan's songs have been recorded by more than a hundred other performers of various nationalities (there are more than sixty cover versions of his song “It’s Good to See You” in ten different languages). His most recent recording, Leaving at Dawn (released in March/April 2009), shows a return to the folk style of guitar playing and songwriting that Allan developed in the sixties and seventies. Rex Preston was last seen on the folk & acoustic scene when his band “Jane on Thunder” reached the final of The BBC Young Folk Awards. Brian is one of the country’s best anglo-concertina players and is just as good on melodeon, while he’s also internationally-known as a singer of traditional ballads. He delivers a repertoire of startling variety, so alongside those classic songs from the tradition, and lively English dance tunes, you can expect to hear newer songs, his own instrumental compositions, and wild squeezebox excursions into ragtime or blues. Phil Drane
Phil returned to folk music and ‘live’ performance just 3 years ago and has been delighting audiences everywhere he has played. He has a natural ability to engage easily with any audience, large or small and loves the spontaneity and interaction of performing ‘live’.
His performances are a brew of traditional and contemporary folk songs from his own English Folk-Roots and material from other cultures that have influenced his life, along with his own well-crafted compositions such as the award-winning 'Song for Jackie'.
Phil’s guitar work is much admired everywhere he performs, particularly his fulsome use of open tunings, and his playing has been described as ‘reminiscent of the very best exponents of finger-style guitar’.
An eclectic repertoire of songs, beautifully arranged and presented, smooth vocals and silky guitar, mixed with a soupcon of chat and witty banter and it all adds up to an experience not to be missed.
June 14th
Tom & Barbara Brown

Tom and Barbara discovered each other as kindred spirits over the course of Mayday in Padstow in 1969 and married in 1970. They have been singing and organising together ever since. Although their speciality is songs of the West Country, their repertoire draws from a huge range of traditional and, to a lesser extent, modern songs. They both enjoy working with other singers and musicians and, in 1971 formed the group 'Culpepper'.

Pressures of work, raising the daughters and Tom enrolling as an Arts Management student at City University all but halted their performance work for several years but in 1998, after 15 years in London, settled again back home in North Devon. Tom now has a PhD to his name, to add to his MA, and they are now working full-time at the singing (and in Tom's case calling), with gigs all over the UK. And they're loving every minute of it!

July 12th
John Conolly

John Conolly is an internationally-respected songwriter who has based his style firmly in the folk tradition. His finely-crafted songs are performed with warmth, good humour and lilting accompaniments on guitar and melodeon.

Many of John’s songs have a tang of the sea, inherited from his upbringing on the east coast of England, where his grandfather and great-grandfather were boatbuilders on the banks of the river Humber. His best-known composition, the classic Fiddlers’ Green, has the ring of a true folk ballad, and has often been taken for a traditional song. John’s more recent work continues this tradition of finely-crafted writing – listen to the heart-rending Willie Leonard, the elegiac Old Men Sing Love Songs, or the outrageously funny Smartarse
John has not been at the Club since 2008 and this is a long awaited return.

Telephone Bill & the Smooth Operators
Telephone Bill and the Smooth Operators were formed in the mid-seventies from members of Cambridge's 'singing dole queue', Duke Duke and the Dukes, and various bluegrassy/country/swingy outfits. That early career included tours all over Britain and halfway round the world, a TV series for BBC 2, numerous BBC radio sessions, a number of singles and three albums.

They were really well-known...really well-known.
Then they split up in 1981, over musical differences, girls and a lost bicycle.

Now, Telephone Bill and the Smooth Operators are slightly less well-known.

The band re-formed to play at the 2001 Cambridge Folk Festival. Founder members Nick, Chris and Robb had been joined by the alumnus of 1978, Steve.

Lacking wind instruments, very high voices and dresses, the band spotted Paula Welham when her band The Floozies opened for them in Bury St Edmunds. She helped them out on a couple of gigs, then they wouldn't let her go.

Back in the seventies, Telephone Bill and the Smooth Operators were hailed as being thirty years ahead of their time. That makes them now only a few years out of date!

Admission: £9.00 & £8.00 Concessions £1.00 discount

That was preceded by 'Eye of the Wind' telling the tale of the renowned explorer, James Cook. The play was produced for radio with David Attenborough narrating. His latest production,'The Moorland Whalers’, was inspired by his long association with the Yorkshire Coast town of Whitby and work he carried out for The Ryedale Folk Museum in North Yorkshire . It tells the story of The Yorkshire Whaling Industry through the recollections of those who took part.

Ewan McLennan has been making headlines over the last year, performing at festivals, clubs, and concert halls across the country. His music combines traditional music from around Britain and beyond, with a particular focus on the music of Scotland, where he was brought up. But Ewan retains a unique and compelling sound of his own in which traditional songs run parallel to his own earthy, self-penned songs.
